12/15 - 12/19

Due the attacks of September 11th, a lot of people became wary or even hostile towards Muslims. While I admit that Muslim extremists were responsible for the attacks, we have to take into consideration that it was a small facet of a typically peaceful and kind religion.

In the video, a woman is told she must remove her head dress, a typical item of clothing for Muslims. I would equate it to a cross that most Christians wear. Now this court told the woman she must remove her head dress. This then would be the same as telling a Christian to remove their cross.

In the United States, we have the right to express our faith and practice our religion. However, with terrorism on the rise, we as Americans have agreed to give up certain rights in order to protect ourselves. This includes searches of our bags, metal detectors, etc.

Please leave a comment answering the following questions:

1) Were any rights being infringed upon? Why or why not?

2) Why do you think the court asked her to remove her scarf?

3) What do you think will happen to her case?

  1. I believe that there were many rights that were being infringed upon. The first amendment states that congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. This judge was being dicriminative of her Muslim faith. I believe that the court asked her to remove the scarf becuase they thought she could be hiding something under there. I think that she will be let free of all charges because she was just trying to protect her rights.

  2. 8B05 Personally I think that there actually were a couple of rights being infringed on because she was arrested for having a HEAD SCARF!! They didn't even say the reason that they arrested her. I could see why they wouldn't let her in because of the metal detector, but arresting her for refusing to take off the scarf is horrible. There are many other people who wear head scarfs, and they think that they are being discriminated. I think that the court asked to remove her scarf for safety reasons, because the metal detector did go off, but that wasn't the only case, but it might be for respect of the judge/jury. I think that she will most likely win because her religious rights were violated and the court of all people should respect the religion 'attire' and what they believe.
