1/12 - 1/16

There are variety of ways to document a society. Currently, we have video, photos, music, text messaging, and other ways to keep track of what's popular in our culture. However, we take these methods for granted. During the mid 20th century, photography was the main method to document a culture. There were many advances that allowed photographers to paint an accurate picture of America in the mid 1900s. Take a look at the pictures and read the captions at the link below, and answer the following questions in your post.

1. What picture struck you as interesting? Why?

2. What did you learn about America by viewing the photos and reading the captions?

3. How can you summarize American culture in the mid 1900s?

  1. 1. I thought that the first picture with color was the best because it really showed the diference between what we thought of the great depresion due to the pictures we had seen.

    2. I learned that although everyone says its so diferent I saw very little diference in most things, just in the cars and technology. Did you see how similar that plane was to todays plane.

    3. I would summarize american culture as hard but with hope. The people's lives did not look easy but I beleive that my opinion of the Great Depression was far worse than what was depicted in these photos.

  2. I thought the pictures of the cities were the most interesting. I think this because these pictures show how much the country has changed over the years. I think it is great that we have a chance to look back and see what the world was like before cell phones, texting, etc. I learned that the world was simple and not as complex as it is today. The quotes said things like about being different and I agree I do think that technology has changed and the way we see our life has also changed. I agree with 7a. I agree because these people did have hope and were striving to have a better life. They did the best they could even if it was hard. I also think that life in 1900's was less complicated in some ways but in others it was more complicated.

  3. The picture that struck me the most interesting was the picture of a San Francisco harbor. I walked in that exact spot over Thanksgiving Break and there those people are, in color, seventy years earlier, on the same exact place I walked. I learned through viewing the photos how neighborhoods looked and the clothes the people used to wear. The American culture in the mid-1900s was very contrast to our culture today. You could see this through housing quality, segregation, clothes the people wore, and how common poverty was, especially those with "minority" ethnic backgrounds. It was all the present back then and I can guarantee that in seventy years, people will be making pages like this about us.
