More than 50 of Turkey's senior military officers were arrested this week amid allegations they planned to overthrow the Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2003.

A few days later, a judge released two of the most prominent suspects, the former chiefs of the navy and the air force but many questions remain unanswered.

According to investigators, Operation Sledgehammer--as it was known-- included plans to bomb mosques and other civilian targets and to provoke a new crisis with Greece in an effort to sow enough instability to justify a military coup. Coups are common in the country, which lies at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Turkey's military has overthrown three governments in the last 50 years and it forced the country's first Islamist-led administration from power in 1997. Tensions have been building between the current military and the government ever since Prime Minister Erdogan's Islamic-leaning AKP party was elected in 2002.

As the army and government continue to work out their differences the fate of the Turkish democracy may rest in their hands.

1. Where is Turkey? Why is its geography important?

2. Why might there be tension between a country's government and its military?

3. What is a coup? Can you name any famous coups?

4. What did you learn about Turkey?

5. Do you think a similar plot could happen in the United States? Explain your answer with as detail as possible.

6. How does the United States deal with the separation of church and state? How is that different from other countries?

7. Can you imagine a time when a coup could be a good thing? Why?

  1. 1. Turkey is located just north of the Arabian Peninsula. Right next to the Meditteranean Sea. This location is important because you can control the trade and pretty much the whole east Meditteranean Sea. What trade is there and they can control this area with military purposes. Most likely Turkey's military is very strong in Navy because they have water all around them.
    2. There might be tension between a government and its military because the military might not agree what the government is deciding. The military people are putting their life on the line for their country. They are protecting everyone especially the government and if the government is doing bad stuff there should be tension between the two.
    3. A coup is a highly succesful, unexpected stroke, act, move;a clever action of acclompishment.
    4. I learned where turkey was because i didn't have any idea where Turkey was.
    5. Possibly a similar plot could happen in the United STates but i think this country is too great and unified to have people trying to kill the presidents and what not.
6.The united states has the freedom of religion law in the first amendment so everyone can have thei own religion unlike other countries.

  2. 1. Turkey is under the Black Sea and very near Iraq. This could be important because it is so close to where we are currently fighting.
    2. Tension between military and government might exist because politicians might be trying to take direct control of military elements. Another reason could be that the government wants the military to do something horrible, or that the military thinks it needs more power over the government.
    3. A coup is where one faction of a government rises up and takes control of another through military force. It could also be where the military itself takes control. One coup is the Chilean coup, where President Salvador Allende was overthrown by his military.
    4. I learned that Turkey has a very powerful military and its government is not currently very stable.
    5. A similar plot could happen in the U.S. if our military gave too much support to any one party and that party decided to use their power to overthrow the other party and set themselves up to rule alone.
    6. The U.S. gives religious freedom to churches and lets them worship freely. Some other countries let politicians rule their religious leaders or vice versa.
    7. A coup could easily be a good thing if there was a very bad leader who needed to be overthrown, or the people simply thought they needed a better or stronger leader.

  3. 1. Turkey is south out Europe and Russia bordering the Mediterranean and Black Sea. It’s geography is important because we need to know what outside influences it has and what countries it can trade to.
    2. There might be tension between a country's government and its military because of power and who has more control over the nation.
    3. A coup is a sudden, violent, and illegal seizure of power from a government. A famous coup is Chilean coup d'état of 1973.
    4. I learned that Turkey has a powerful army, they feel very strongly about religions there, the government in Turkey is a problem, different religions cause problems, Islamize textbooks, and they tried to limit alcohol sales. The population in Turkey is 70million. Most of the people are Muslim. Turkey is very diverse and large.
    5. No, I do not think a similar plot could happen in the United States. I think that because our government is much more trustworthy, they follow laws to the very exact, and citizens are always watching what their actions and verdicts are. Our government is under the eye of the media.
    6. The United States deals with the separation of church and state by letting citizens have freedom of religion and stay out of the picture. It is different from other countries by us having the freedom of religion and they don’t. The government does not interact in our religions as they do in other countries.
    7. No, I cannot imagine a time where a coup is a good thing because violence is never a good thing it weakens the country especially when the violence is with the government. It is never good when the government turns against the military.

  4. 1. Eurasia; it is the bridge between Europe and Asia so they get along with both Europeans and Asians.
    2. They know themselves as the guardians of the country's stability and secularism
    3. A highly successful act; I'm not exactly positive of it, but I think that the whole Hitler thing was a coup
    4. Their Operation Sledgehammer sounds very complicated. They must be smart.
    5. Yes, I do believe so because we have many people in our country who do not get along. Whether they don't like our president or they don't like a kid they grew up with, they could do a lot of damage. It could even be from a different country out of envy because we are very rich out of a lot of countries.
    6. In public schools, run by the state, they are not aloud to follow one certain religion. They respect that there are many different religions that are all together in that one school. In a private school, usually run by a church, temple, synagogue, etc, they practice one religion. In other countries, they may have to follow certain rules just because their president or king is part of the religion that follows those rules.
    7. Yes because a coup could be maybe like ending the civil war or finding world peace. There are a lot of people who would love to follow their dreams and, to them, their dream would be a coup.

  5. 1. Turkey is located or bordering the Black Sea, the Mediterranean, the Aegean, and the Marmara. Turkey's geography is important, because it gives easy access to important regions and major energy resources.

    2. The military is taught to hurt anyone who does not follow the rules, while the government would maybe want to meet with the bad person and give them a trial. Also the military and government are lead differently, so they might not agree with eachothers actions and ideas.

    3. A coup is a strike to the state or a blow to the government. A victory for military. A famous coup called the Chilean coup d'etat of 1973.

    4. I learned that Turkey, is actually an important place for resources, like energy.

    5. Yes, because what if you voted for a president, and you ended up not liking him at all, you would what to get rid of him. People go to derastic measures, for their opinions.

    6. In the United States, you can have any religion you want, it's a free country. We don't need religions to rule. No other country is a free country with their rules, so you might need to be a certain religion to be a resident in the country.

    7. When terrorists attack the United States, the president may want to try to talk the terrorist out of killing, when the military would go and track down the terrorists and lock them up. People would want to be safe from terrorists, and want them locked up. Not risk their president.

    1. Turkey is an Eurasian country on the Anatolian peninsula and is bordered by eight other countries. This geography is important because is could influence the decisions the country makes.

    2. There might be tension between Turkey's government and military because the government just learned the military had plans to overrun them.

    3. A coup is a overrun of a country. A famous coup was Chilean. The Chilean military overran the Chile president Salvador Allende.

    4. I learned about how Turkey is in a crisis because a lot of their top military leaders are being arrested because of planning a coup they never brought out.

    5. No, I don't believe a similar plot could happen to the U.S. because we have very extensive detective systems so nothing could ever happen like that.

    6. We deal with church and state very well because as a U.S. citizen we believe in your freedom of religion. Therefore, we don't normally run into many problems in our state and religion.

    7. Yes, when the government is totally out of control and has gone wild a coup would e a good thing in my opinion.

  7. 1. Turkey is just above Iraq and is on the coast of the meditteranean. It is important because it has can have naval capabilities.
    2. The military leaders may not like the gov. or want the power for themselves.
    3. A coup is a rogue group trying to take over a government. I have heard of one in 1973 in Chile but I don't know any details.
4.I learned that Turkey is a pretty unstable country at the moment I have also learned the Gov. is aiming toward Islam. They also have a powerful army.
    5. I don't believe so because our leaders get along very well and we all work for common goals such as the war and helping our economy. I just don't think it could happen at this time.
    6. The United States has handled it good I believe because there haven't been any fights and it is going peacefully.
    7. I believe it can only be a good thing when the gov. is very corrupt and it must be done to save the government. 7b13

  8. 1. Turkey is located in the Middle East. It is important because many people in the Middle East are Muslim.
    2. There might be tensions because the military might not like the way that the government is handling thing or visa versa.
    3. It is where the military takes control of the county by force. There is a coup in Niger.
    4. I learned that their military is very strong.
    5. I do think that there could be a coup because our military is very strong and could do anything at any time.
    6. The USA handles with seperation from church and state because we are a nutural country. But Turkey is a Muslim country and supports Muslim.
    7. If your counrty is fead up with the government may want to start over with the counrty.

  9. 1. Turkey is located in the middle east just east of Greece. Turkey's geography is important because they can easily reach Asia and Europe because they are right on the border.

2 The government of a country might want to continue with a war, and the military, since they know what war is and feels like, don't want to continue the war.

    3. A coup is when one person on one side gives away his/her teams stratagy to the other side. I can't think of any famous coups of hand.

    4. I learned that Turkey has a very powerful gov., and that they have overthrown three governments in the last 50 years.

    5. I do think there could be a similar plot with the United States. There could be an important military leader who goes to the terrorists and gives away the securities to all of the bases around the country.

    6. The U.S. lets people worship there own Gods an practices. Some countries don't allow that.

    7. A coup could be a good thing if one of the terrorists told us where the other terrorists are hiding, and he realized what he was doing was wrong.

  10. 1. It is located in between Europe and Asia. It's geography is important because it is surrounded by many bodies of water.

    2. There might be tension because the military might not like the way the government is running them and wants to do it their own way.

    3. A coup is the taking over of an existing country usually violently and illegally in a short period of time. The Veto Coup and the Guardian Coup are two coups that I know about.

    4. I learned that Turkey is mostly Islamic.

    5. I don't because I believe that even though we have some different beliefs, we all accept each others opinion.

    6. The United States gives us many rights such as the practice of our own beliefs. Other countries force their citizens to practice certain beliefs and follow strict guidelines.

    7. Yes, if we were to have a change in government and become communist, I think a coup could help us to restore freedom and rights.

  11. 1 Turkey is in the Middle-east, right below Europe, east of Greece, and in the Mediterranean World.

2 There might be a tension because the government isn't sure if the military leaders are planning to overthrow them.

3 Coup is a sudden change in government illegally or by force. I don't know of any coups.

4 I learned what a coup is and that Turkey has always had a strong military.

5 I don't think anything like could could happen because our government and military work together in problems.

6 The U.S. knows that there is religious freedom in our country and works to keep religion from interfering to much with the government so it doesn't cause to many rebukes.

7 I think a good time would be when in many problems, such as education, healthcare, and economy, and the country has a weak ruler, a strong ruler in a coup could take over and help the country.

  13. #1. Turkey's North-Western area is between the Black Sea and the Mediterranian Sea. It's geography is important because it is by some of the most popular, most visited, places in the world.
#2. There might be tension because the government will probably have a different opinion and will want to do things a different way than the military, who will might want to do what's best for their country all the time.
#3. A coup is a highly successful, unexpected act. This might be one, when Martin Luther King Jr. rebelled against racist descrimination, it didn;t work in the beginning, but slowly started to go into affect.
#4. I learned Turkey does things MUCH different than we do in the United States and when they don't all agree, they don't always work it out the way people should, they just go down the difficult road.
#5. I don't think the same thing will happen in the US, but we never know, people are always filled with surprises.
#6. The US deals with the seperation between church and state with the laws and amendments we have and cherish. Unlike other countries, who don't have a say in some things, the United States have rights that mostly everyone obeys.
#7. Yes, incase it helps the country A LOT, then it could be a good thing and people will apreciate it later, after it was done.

  14. 1) The Republic of Turkey is located in the Eurasian countries. Next to Greece, Thrace, Balkan, Irag, Syria, Bulgaria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Anatolian. It's geography is important because its religion is Islamic. Turkey is significant because of its geostrategic importance.
    2) There can be tension between the two maybe because they believe in two religions or other beliefs.
    3) A coup is a highly successful, unexpected stroke, act, or move; a clever action or accomplishment. One coup I can name is a "plenty coup" which was when a group of crow chiefs led a tribe from the so-called "buffalo days".
    4) I never knew anything was wrong with the Turkish government. This is kinda a wake call for because I don't think much about Turkey these day. I really didn't Turkey did have problems, i thought they were like Syria, all peacefuland happy.
    5) There can be plot like that, because we're very weak right now with our economy. Sadly, we can, maybe... or not be a target to take advantage of.
    6) The U.S. doesn't really respond to this. Well, Turkey uses some of the commandments as their laws of the government; Tho shall not commit Adultery.

    3. A coup is an overthrow of the state. A famous coup is the bloodless coup in Brazil.
    4. That it has a strong army and a corrupt Gov.
    5. Yes, because our country has a very suspect Gov. Some people in the military do not like it and that's why there is tension in the U.S.
    6. The United States does not care what religion you are compared to some countries that enforce their religion.
    7. Yes, because someone good in the military might realize how horrible their Gov. is and fight back.

  16. 1. Turkey is in the northeastern part of Europe and the southwestern part of Asia. It is a crossroads between the Middle East, Asia, and Europe (3 important places).
    2. There might be tension because the government rules by consent and the military physically rules by force.
    3. A coup is a sudden, violent, and illegal seizure of power from a government. Some include the 1973 Chilean coup d'état, a military coup in Uganda led by Idi Amin in 1971, in 1969 the Libyan monarchy was overthrown by Colonel Qadhafi, and a military coup in Mauritania in 2008.
    4. I learned that although Turkey is mostly Islamic, it has a secular government. I also learned that their military has defeated three governments in coups.
5.Technically, this could happen in the U.S., but it is unlikely because most people would disagree with the military and fight them because we have the right to carry weapons. We are a multicultural society and no one religion is forced upon us.
    6. The U.S. allows us to practice whatever religion and there are no benefits for any one religion. Religion usually does not interfere with the government/state. Other countries, such as Saudi Arabia (Islam), have to practice a certain religion and the government is often based off religious beliefs.
    7. A time when a coup could be good is when a government is treating a country very unjustly and the military overthrows them for a good purpose (for the people), and not for themselves and the factor of power. It could also be good if they attempted a coup but did not hurt or kill anybody. This would make the citizens believe that the military is going to rule fairly and is looking to find some peace.

    5) I do think that a similar problem could happen in the US because some people do and do not like the government for their own reasons. They may try to make it collapse because they don't like it. Some people are crazy and would do those kinds of things.
    6) The US deals with separation of church and state by letting all the people choose their own religion. Some countries force you to have a certain religion.

I don not think a simila plot can not happen in the U.S in almost any part of the U.S because the United states is very stron and has very good security and people with bombs will not be able to get by. Some people have tryed, but the airports security is so good. About 1/30 people have probably created a bomb in the U.S.6.)They feel that some people arent religious and should not deal with the seperation of church and the state. Some other countries are different because they might let other people to go into church anytime when they need it7.) a coup can be a good thing because if no one like the president because they just learned that he wanted to do bad things there could be a coup and he will get kicked out Immedietly and thats were a good coup can happen.

  19. 1) Turkey stretches across the Anatolian peninsula in Western Asia and Thrace in the Balkan region of southeastern Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Azerbaijan (the exclave of Nakhchivan) and Iran to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus are to the south; the Aegean Sea to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. Turkey's high elevation in comparison to its neighbors, half of the land area being higher than 1000 meters and two thirds higher than 800 meters. Mountain ranges extend in an east-west direction parallel to the north and south coasts, and these are a principal factor in determining ecological conditions. This also means that apart from the Asi river in Anatolia and the Meriç in Thracian Turkey, all Turkey's rivers have their sources within its borders and flow into the sea, into neighboring countries or into interior drainages. Turkey has seven river basins. The principal rivers in the Black Sea basin being the Sakarya, Kizilirmak Yesilirmak and Çoruh.

    2) There might be a tension because the military is usually the one who overthrows the government.
    3) A coupe is a overthrow of the government.

    4) I learned that Turkey has a very military.

    5) I don't think a similar plot could happen to the US because there are so many divisions and it is very large.

    6) The bible doesn't dictate how the country is ruled. It is different because in some countries church and state are one.

    7) When a bad leader is ruling and a great leader takes over, it is a good thing because the next leader will probably be better than the one before

  20. 1. Turkey is in the Middle East. This is important because there is already a lot of tension in the Middle East.

    2. Because the military has powerful weapons, and the generals can have much influence on the soldiers. Sometimes enough to get them to rebel against their country.

    3. A coup is where the military tries to overthrow the leaders of a country. I cannot name any famous coups.

    4. I learned that there are a lot of Muslim people in Turkey. I have also learned that there is much tension in Turkey right now.

    5. If some military officer with a lot of influence decided that he was not happy with the presidency, he could order his troops to take command of the white house.

    6. In the US, we don't mix government and church. People can have separate views on church and government, and not be punished.

    7. Maybe if a leader is torturing people, and not doing what is right for their country, a coup could be good for the citizens.

  21. 1) Turkey is located above and to the east of Africa. It is the bridge between Asia and Europe, though most of its land is on Asia. The geography is important because it is between two major continents. This could cause Turkey to be in the middle of a war or forgotten about or other things.

    2) There might be tension between a country's government and it's military because the army may be unhappy about what the government is telling it to do. They might have other oppinions, like not wanting to go to war or wanting to and not being sent.

    3) A coup is an uprising, where a group of people go against the government and try to overthrow it. The military in Turkey is trying to cause one. One famous coup happened in 1917 when Vladimir Lenon led the famous October revolution that overthrew the Russian government and started the first socialist state.

    4) I learned that right now in Turkey, citizens are nervous a coup will be caused. An attack of arresting to create a coup was attempted but not fully completed. Furthermore, I learned that some people dislike the Prime Minister's Ilamic beliefs even though he has acted with some very good secular actions, besides meeting with other rulers to strenthen ties with the muslim world.

    5) In the US, I believe that we have better control on are army. Soldiers volunteer to go so if they do not like how things are done, they can really only regret signing up. After, i believe it is three years, any soldier can leave his force if he so chooses. Also, our government seems fair and not rash in war, so i think the soldiers have no big reason to be angry.

    6) In the United States, there is a fine line between state and church because of the first ammendment. We are allowed to have freedom of religion but are rights cannot infringe upon the rights of others. This keeps things in control and everyone happy. Many other places don't have freedom to worship who they please which is a terrible thing! We are all very fortunate to live in a place like America which is in many ways quite different from other countries.

    7) A time when a coup could be a good thing would be when there is a ruler who is doing terrible things. For example a coup against Hitler before he got going could have saved many innocent people from being killed.

    2. There might be tension between the government and the military because the government may be forcing the military to fight a war that is not even their war to fight.
    3. A coup is sudden appropriation of leadership or power; a takeover; some famous coup is the Quiet coup.
    4. I learned Turkey has a lot of problems in their government and hopefully the United States won’t run into some problems they ran into.
    5. No, I don’t think a similar plot like this will happen to the United States because we have so many people watching the goverments moves I think if they thought of doing that these people would notice it and shut it down fast.
    6. The First Congress' deliberations show that its understanding of the separation of church and state differed sharply from that of a couple of years ago. It is different because some churches are very close to the goverment in other countries.

  24. 1. Turkey is in Western Asia/Southern Europe. It is considered to be in Eurasia. The geography is important because Turkey is the bridge between Europe and Asia.

    2. There might be tension between the military and the government because the military is the source of Islamic culture brought to Turkey and the government wants to overrule them. The government would overrule by not enforcing Islam or enforcing a different religion. This could cause tension because the military could feel neglected or the people could favor the military if they are Muslim.

    3. A coup is a major and sudden change of government legally or by force. An example of a coup is in 1911 when the Chinese military made its first attempt to make the Chinese government republican. It is known as the Xinhai Revolution.

    4. I learned that Turkey has always had lots of problems with the government and the military. Not only are they having problems now but they have since 1923.

    5. I think that many people serving our country in the military could eventually get sick of going to Iraq and seeing their friends die. They could get tired of having to kill many people so they rebel against the president of the United States so they won’t have to suffer anymore.

    6. The United States deal with the separation of church and state by not enforcing a religion and letting everyone practice any religion they want to. It is different from other countries because other countries make the citizens practice a certain religion of the government’s choice. People in other countries don’t have the freedom of practice while the United States does.

    7. A coup could be a good thing if the government changes from monarchy to democracy. This would be a change in government and also would be a good thing because the citizens would have a say in their government.

    2. Why might there be tension between a country's government and its military? There might be tension between a country's governmnet and military because the military could think bombing a place would be a good idea. When the government think it would not be a good idea.

    3. What is a coup? Can you name any famous coups? A coup can be a strike or a blow to a governmnet. One coup could mabe be the Great Depression.

    4. What did you learn about Turkey? I learned that Turkey is a country that their government and military do not communicate well.

    5. Do you think a similar plot could happen in the United States? Explain your answer with as detail as possible. I think there could be a similar plot in the U.S.A because our our military could think of a great way to end the Iraq war. But our governmnet could think it is a bad idea.

    6. How does the United States deal with the separation of church and state? How is that different from other countries? In the United States we deal with the separation of chruch and state very well because in the U.S we have the freedom of religion. In other countries the government makes them practice one religion or they wil be put in jail.

    7. Can you imagine a time when a coup could be a good thing? Why? I think a coup could be a good think because the U.S government could think sending more troops to Iraq would be a good idea. Bet the military has the war under control that could help save the government money or even lives.

    3. A coup is a meeting place when presidents meet or where military leaders meet. A famous coup is the white house and the government's place in different countries.

    4. What I learn about Turkey is that they get the job done and they do not wait for even worse things to happen.

    5. I do think that it could happen to the U.S. because we are having problems with our military too. But we do not have a lot of Muslims in the U.S.

    6. The United States deal with the separation of the church and the state is, we have are Church communities and churches and we have public communities. It took a long time to figure it out , but we did. Other countries do not have a huge separation of a lot.

    7. No, because a coup is always an emergency of something so I do not think there well be a time when a coup is a good thing.

  30. 1 Turkey is located in between Asia ANd EUrope. Its geography is important because now they have a big mix of cultures and opinions.
2 There might be tension between the countries government and military because the government wants to do something effectivly and maturely, but the military just wants to blow things up and move on.
3 A coup is a brave or reckless deed. I don't think that there are many famous coups. Then again there is more then one way in how you pronounce it.
4 On thing I learned was that operation 'sledge-hammer' began in 2003, wanting to burn down many mosques.
5 I think the same situation could start in the U.S. because we have many different ideas, the government and military could evebtually not get along. I think it could happen because we can never predict the future.
6 The United States deals with the church seperatly with the state. When the government decides on something, they make sure with the churches, that it is alright. In other countries, there states do what ever they want, without making sure it's ok with the church(s).
7 I can imagine when a coup would be a good thing. Say you are in a war, a brave deed would to fight yiur hardest and be clever. If you win, then that would be a good thing. If you come up with something clever, brave, and daring and it works, that would also have a posittive outlook.

  31. 1- Turkey is in-between Europe and Asia. Three of its four sides have bodies of water around them; this helps with trade so that there are many different trade routes.
2- The military may get frustrated with the government because they would probably think they are being under paid because they are the ones risking their lives to save others'.
3- A coup is a brilliant or noted success. Some big/famous ones would be: George Washington(starting the USA), when freedom/eqality was given to the "nigro" people, and the Wright Brothers(did the first flight).
4- I learned that there are a lot of tensions in Turkey.
5- I think that our government is pretty stable, but there may be some tetering twards a fall. This may be because the people are in destress and are in very big debt. Some people are living on the streets because they can't afford to live in an apartment!
6- They basically don't say that one religion is better than the other and they try to keep there own a little hidden so as to not make troubles arise. In other countries the person who is in charge, they have the say in what that country is going to practice, do, and basically say.

  32. 1. Turkey is west of the Mediterranean Sea. Its geography is important because it is the middle of everything, and the people who live there get a lot more information than other countries. It is also the bridge from Asia to Europe.
    2. They both might have separate ideas that could make a tension.
    3. An organized attempt to take over the government. Operation Sledgehammer.
    4. The thing that I learned about turkey was that it is not a very stable country right now.
    5. No, I don’t think that a coop would happen in the U.S. because our country is too organized and stable. It also wouldn’t have a coop because we are in a “caution” zone right now because of the attempted terrorist attacks.
    6. They dealt with this by combining them again. Others didn’t combine them.
    7. A time when a coop would be a good thing would be if you have a corrupt government and the people who are in the coop are doing it for the good of the country.

  33. 1. Turkey is right next to Syria and Iraq. It's geograghy is important because they are right by big rivers and have good transportation and water supply.

    2. The government and military may fight because they both are in positions of high power, especially if they have disagreements.

    3. A coup is and extremely important act or move of something such as freedom, women rights, or no slavery.

    4. I learned that Turkey is mostly made up of muslims but is a secular country.

    5. I think that might happen but most chances are that something of a plot would not happen in America because we are well protected and there is not that much conflict. We are one country and proud to be free. I do not have any problems with that.

    6. The United States if a free country so you have the right to choose whatever religon you want to choose. I don't think we have ever had any big trouble with separation of religon, but there are just different churches.

  34. 1. Turkey is in between the Black sea and the Mediterranean Sea.

There may be tension between the government and the troops of Turkey because some of the big names in the military such as generals were plotting against the government.

A coup is a highly successful clever act. There was a coup in Turkey in the year of 1997. This coup forced the country’s first Islamic lead administration from power.

I have taken from this video that Turkey is going through many issues including the government and the troops. The government has been working toward finding a stable balance for the country but the troops are not making it any easier.

I do believe a plot such as the one occurring in Turkey could occur in the U.S considering the drop in the economy and how the government is spending their money is something that the troops or any politician.

The U.S has separated state and church by sticking to the freedom that we made up of. The U.S separates church and state by not creating the laws of the Country on the churches laws.

7.I don’t think a coup could be a good thing only because a country should be working together and any time a country splits it doesn’t end up well.

  35. 1) Turkey is located on the upper boarder of Iraq and Syria. Its geography is important because it is mostly open area and desserts where you can really do anything.

    2) A country and its military might have tensity between them because maybe some people do not think they have a good military.

    3) A coup is an illegal act. I honestly can not think about a famous coup right now.

    4) I learned that people living in Turkey aren't very happy with the government or the military. And the government and military aren't happy with each other.

    5) A similar thing could happen in the U.S. because some people are not liking what decisions and or ideas the government and or president are coming up with. Some people don't like the way Obama is working and people might plan something to get him out of office.

6)Yes, the separation between church and state does happen in the U.S. It is most recognized in public schools. Because of the separation between church and state public schools can not teach a specific religion to their students.

7)I can't really see how doing something illegal could be a good thing because if you commit a crime someone always suffers from it and that's how I look at it.

  36. 1.) Turkey is located between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. The country acts as a bridge from Europe to Asia. This is important because Turkey might be influenced by the two surrounding lands.

2.)Yes, there is tension between Turkey’s government and military ever since the prime minister was elected in 2002 because more then fifty current and former officers and generals were arrested, and over twenty of them were charged for planning a coup. So, now the government is having a hard time trusting the military officers and generals

3.)A coup is a sudden, violent, illegal seizure from a government. A famous coup was the 1973 Chilean coup.

4.) I have learned that Turkey has a big and powerful army, and that three military leaders discussed in a meeting together what can be done to release tensions over a coup plot.

5.)Yes, the same thing could probably happen in the United States, although, it would be harder because we are a bigger and more powerful country than Turkey.

6.)The United States deals with church and state by letting people worship freely. However, other countries’ religions are built into their government.

7.) A coup could be a good thing if a government is really bad and the people overthrew it to save themselves.

    2) There is probably tension between a country's government and its military because people in the military tried to overthrow the government.

    3) A coup is the taking over of an existing country usually violently and illegally in a short period of time. Well I couldnt really name any but I searched one up. In December 28, 2008 In Guinea it happened.

    4) I learned that Turkey is going through some serious problems with its military and government. It is not a trusted place at the moment.

    5) I dont think a similar plot like this could happen in the United States. The United States has a very good system and security.

    6) The United States deals with separation by of the church and state by making it illegal. It is known as the First Amendment.

    7) Well the correct definition of a coup is a highly successful, unexpected stroke, act, or move; a clever action or accomplishment. So yes it can be a good thing. If we take a high successful move or act such as winning the war than it is known as a good thing and that is what a coup is.

  39. 1. Turkey is in southeastern Europe. Turkey borders Iraq, Syria, Greece and Bulgaria, Armenia, Georgia, and Iran. The geography around and in Turkey is important because it supports the living and production of Turkey's activities. The bodies of water are important because they support the productivity of fishing. The geography affects the economy in many different ways.
    2. There could be tension between a country's government and military because both groups don't always agree on the same things. For example: The government may think we are spending too much on the military funds, but the military probably knows what is better because they are in action and know what they are talking about. Not everyone agrees on the same idea or solution, so it makes it very difficult to decide on the right one.
    3. A military coup is an organized action by the armed forces of a country meant to overthrow and replace its government. It can be successful or not. At times, it can be temporary or permanent. No, I do not know of any famous coups. I searched the internet and nothing useful for me came up.
    4. One thing I have learned from this video is that the problem of coups is hugely affecting Turkey. It was not the first time there has been a ‘plot’ to take over the government. You could tell that people are very concerned about what is going to happen next with the government and military forces. Also that a coup really can't be a positive thing.
    5. No, I do not think a similar plot could happen in the United States of America because I believe that we are 'smart' enough not to do this. Most people have heard about what is happening in Turkey and know the consequences. If something similar was planned I would imagine that it would not succeed because our government is fierce and quick to react.
    6. The United States deals with the separation of church and state by tracing back to a letter by Thomas Jefferson to Baptists. Jefferson spoke of the combined effect of the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. Since then there has been many opinions handed down by the United States Supreme Court. It is different than other countries because we refer back to a letter by Thomas Jefferson. Other countries don’t have that letter so they obviously do something else.
    7. Right now I could not think of any reason a coup could be a good thing. To me, I think coups are unreasonable.

  41. 1. Turkey is located next to Iran and is above Syria and Egypt. Turkey is also between Bulgaria and Georgia and is under the black sea and above the Mediterranean Sea. Turkeys geography is important because, for one reason, is a very nice attraction. With Turkey’s rich a mixed culture, historical and modern sights and inventions, and beautiful scenery. Turkey is a fun place to vacation to. Also, Turkey is close to many countries that they know have relations with. Turkey is making deals and trade with many of the surrounding countries. Last but not least. Turkey has the beautiful Mediterranean and Aegean sea around many parts of it. This allows not only a beautiful day at the beach, but for many trade products to be easily shipped in and out of Turkey!

    2. There be tension between a country's government and its military because many military officials were arrested for the plot to destroy the Islamic government. Now, the men who were arrested were among the top military officials and this causes tension because the government arrested many of their officers and making everyone think that the government doesn’t trust their military.

    3. A coup is a very successful and sudden deed that was a wise and clever accomplishment. The Chilean coup was a famous military coup that was involved in over the overthrowing the government from President Salvador Allende.

4.I learned about Turkey’s geographical features such as the climate and exact location in the world. I also learned about the tension between the government and the military. Last but not least, I learned about Turkey’s large and powerful government and it’s large role to Turkey. Wow! I learned a lot about Turkey.

    5. I think that the military could try to overthrow the government here in the United States, but I do think this would be rare or very difficult for one main reason. The reason is that there has not been large tension between our government and the military. I do not think the military would try to take over a part of our government because they know the government has a close eye on them and the main plotters would be caught, just like what happened in Turkey.

    6. Well, here in the United States the government is the only thing that can pass laws for every state. Here the church isn’t allowed to be in charge and make for example, everyone go the church on Sunday a law. In other countries, the church is also in charge. They can tell the people that they have to were white in church for example. They can make that a law. I never knew what the difference between the churches and government in other countries is like.

    7. I think a time when a coup would be a good thing would be when a part of a government group was having great trouble for, example, and was falling apart. It would be good if a stronger government group set up a coup and took the weak group over. It would be even more beneficial the stronger government group let the weak group regain power their group after the strong group is done rebuilding he government group’s strength.

  42. 1. Turkey is located in Eurasia. This is important because it must allow people from both countries and cultures to live together.
    2. There might be tension between a military and the government because the military needs a certain amount of power and the government does as well. One might have to much power and be hurting the other.
    3. No, I cannot name any famous coups. A coup is a sudden decisive action taken on the government.
    4. I learned that Turkey is mostly home to Muslims and the military is trying to secularize the country.
    5. I do not think this could happen in the United States because we already have our constitution and it clearly states that anyone is free to worship their own religion. Our military is good, and our government can keep things well under control.
    6. The United States deals with the separation of the church and state by keeping the government secular. Other countries do not keep their governments secular and rule with a certain religion.
7.A coup can be good when the government is doing something wrong that is affecting the country. The coup could want to help for the better of the country.

  43. 1.) Turkey is basically a bridge between Asia and Europe. It is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Aegan Sea, the Sea of Marmara, and the Black Sea. Many countries also border it, which makes trade easier. Its geography is important because it gives the opportunity to either start wars or make strong alliances.
2.) There could be a tension between a country's government and its military for many reasons. One reason could be that the military wants to make choices in the war that the government does not allow. Another reason could be that the military needs equipment for the war, but the government won't submit the money to pay for it.
3.) A coup d'etat, or coup for short, in French means overthrow of the state. It is a sudden and decisive change of government illegally or by force. A famous coup could be when Louis Napoleon became possessed of complete power, which took place on December 2nd, 1851. Another famous coup could be the Chilean coup d'etat of 1973. On September 11, 1973, the government of President Salvador Allende was overthrown by the military in Chile.
4.) I learned that in Turkey, a coup d'etat is very easily predicted. There are also often many arrests that are not true. For example, the Chiefs of the Navy and the Air Force were arrested because it was thought that they were planning a coup d'etat. The last thing I learned was that ever since the election in 2002, there has been tension between the military and the government.
5.) I do think that a similar plot has and could happen in the USA. I think that being assassinated is like a coup d'etat, because it is an overthrow of the government. It is not likely that our presidents will be assassinated, and we do not predict that they will, but there is always a chance.
6.) The word "God" does not appear in the Constitution of the USA. After 3 and a half months of debating and negotiating about what should be included in this document, is was decided that the Constitution will be secular. The US today states that government and religious institutions are to be separate and independent from each other. In other countries, one religion is decided upon in the government, and that will be the main religion of the country. They do not have the rights like the US: secularity of government and freedomm of religion.
7.) A coup could be a good thing if the government was corrupt. This probably wouldn't happen though, because then the military would not be strong, and no one would be powerful enough to overthrow them. But if the military had gotten strong and clever, they could probably manipulate their way into overthrowing their government.
