Current Event Week of 5/3

The African country of Ethiopia has often been associated with chronic famine, and many Ethiopians still depend on food aid to survive. But, more and more foreign investors are discovering that Ethiopia has abundant land rich for farming.

Many commercial farms have sprung up across Ethiopia that grow food destined for wealthier countries. While Ethiopians work on the large farms, they do not usually make a living wage and lack the technology to farm the land themselves. Many experts and Ethiopian government officials criticize the foreign farms because the benefits to ordinary Ethiopians are minimal. And, the large farms often run the smaller Ethiopian farms that do exist out of business.

Other experts see the situation in a positive light and view Africa as the next breadbasket for the world. They say that if the native Africans are treated properly and are able to benefit from their land's abundance, leasing African farmland to foreigners could become a win-win situation.

Answer the following questions in your post:
1. Where is Ethiopia?

2. What is arable land? What qualities must good farmland have?

3. What parts of our country are known for their abundant farmland?

4. Do you think leasing Ethiopian farmland to foreign investors is a good or bad idea? Why?

5. Merera Gudina, the political science professor in the video, likens the Ethiopians' work on large farms to a "colonial arrangement." What does he mean by this?

6. What other resources does the African continent have? Take a look at diamonds in Botswana, oil in Nigeria, wine and agriculture in South Africa. How is farming in Ethiopia similar or different from those examples?

  1. 1 Ethiopia is on the East Coast of Africa, near the Red Sea.

2 Arable land is land that can be used for crops. Good farmland much have the vitamins and minerals the are essential for plant life.

3 Most farm land is in the middle area of the US, such as Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, N. Dakota, S. dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Missouri, though California has rich farmlands in Central Valley.

4 I think it is a bad idea because most Ethiopian people are poor and starve so they need the work of farming to provide for themselves.

5 I don't understand what he is saying and I've watched that part of the video multiple times. sorry :(

6 Africa provides salt, gold, illegal ivory, and illegal hunting ranges. Ethiopia differs from the example because they do not have many mines, but is similar because they have agriculture.

  2. 1. Ethiopia is near the coast of the Red Sea in Africa. Its neighboring territories are Djibouti, Somalia, Eritrea, Kenya, and Sudan.
    2. Arable land is an agricultural term meaning land that can be used for growing crops. The qualities that good farmland must have is that the soil and climate are suitable for agriculture.
    3. Parts of our country that are known for their abundant farmland is the Midwest.
    4. I think leasing Ethiopian farmland to foreign investors is a good idea because then we get more use out of it and that can lead to less starving people in the world. If the farmland is not being used it is being wasted.
    5. What he means by this is that the large farms are geographically grouped , into communities that help each other.
    6. Other resources that the African continent has is the ocean, the Red Sea, and the rivers which they can get water. from. There are many different resources in all the different countries. Ethiopia has fewer resources and most are imported. You could not live off the resources in Ethiopia like you could in other countries.

  3. 1)Ethiopia is bordered by Djibouti and Somalia to the east, Kenya to the south, Eritrea to the north and Sudan to the west.

    2) Arable land is land that can be cultivated. A good farmland must have fertile soil and have a source of water.

3)The mid part of our land is known for their abundant farmland.

4)I think it is a good idea leasing Ethiopian farmland because they can make a profit that they need off it.

5)He means that people keep taking over parts of Africa and that this is just another takeover of a poor country.

    3) Abundant farmland is found in Mid part of the U.S.

    4) I think it is a good idea because Ethiopia is in poverty and this can make them profit.

    5) He means that people keep taking over Africa throughout time and this is just another take over of a poor country.

6)Ethiopia has coffee and supplies almost half the world with it. That is its only main resource.

  5. 1. Ethiopia is in north eastern Africa.
    2. Arable land is land that can be easily farmed. Good farmland has to have rich soil, get good sunlight, and used to need to be near water.
    3. The middle of the U.S. has much farmland (between Texas and Ohio).
    4. Leasing farmland is a good idea because Ethiopians do not have the technology to do it themselves, and other countries can.
    5. He means that Ethiopians do not have much technology and can only use the land that they can farm themselves.
    6. Africa has many resources including: iron ore, copper, and petroleum. Farming is different because you grow things to farm, and these things need to be pulled from the ground.

  6. 1) Ethiopia is in Africa.
    2) Arable land is land that is capable of producing crops. Farmland must have water, sun, fertile soil, and seeds in order to produce crops.
    3) The middle states produce the most produce because of the non-humid climate, and the vast amount of space.
    4) If the reason for leasing the farmland is because that land is good for farming on then it is a bad idea because "they" could be making money off of the products.
    5) He means that the people should work together and pay for their own crops while the government gives them water.
    6) Africa has gold mines, diamond mines, oil, wine, herbs, fruits, vegetables, and others. I found this website listing all of the resources: (http://exploringafrica.matrix.msu.edu/teachers/curriculum/m6/natural_resources.html)

  7. 1. West of Somalis on the Red Sea.
    2. Arable land is land that is or can be cultivated. Arable land must have fertile soil, a significant amount of water nearby, and a farmer to tend to it.
    3. California, most of the central states
    4. I think that leasing land to foreign is a good and bad idea. It is good because that will supply more jobs for the people. It is bad because the people who don't have jobs won't be able to afford the produce that the private farmlands produce.
    5. He means that the produce that the farms make is given to other richer countries and is not being sold to the common people of Ethiopia.
    6. Farming in Ethiopia is mostly similar to all of these conditions. Each one requires African workers to tend to whatever crops or products they are creating.

  8. 1. Ethiopia is located in east-central Africa. It is bordered by Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya, and Eritrea.
    2. In geography, arable land is an agricultural term, meaning land that can be used for growing crops. It includes all land where soil and climate is suitable for agriculture, including forests and natural grasslands, and areas falling under human settlement. Qualities good farmlands should/must have are: clean (not infested with bad things), they must have crops that are alive and not dead, healthy environment, the right soil, and a "high-quality" location.
    3. Some parts/states of our country that are known for abundant farmland are Iowa (corn), Texas (cotton, hay), Nebraska (soybeans, corn), and Idaho (potatoes. All of the states above are known for a great amount of farmland and the crops listed above.
    4. I think leasing Ethiopian farmland to foreign investors is both a good and bad idea. The reason I think it is a good idea is because then the Ethiopian will be able to receive more money. This could help the problem of hunger because then the country would have enough money to feed everyone. It could be a win-win situation. On the other hand, it could also be a bad idea and decision because the foreigners could take the money from investments and not give a lot back. Even though that is an uncommon event in our time today, it is still possible. If the Ethiopians are treated properly, then I think the whole idea would make a difference for both Ethiopian people and the foreign investors.
    5. Merera Gudina means the land and food is given away to the investors and the Ethiopians are not benefitting from this. They work on the farms to make crops, but do not get to eat any of them. The investors have promised them schools, water, and roads, but they are not receiving any thing.
    6. Other natural resources the African continent has is gold, platinum, cobalt, chromium, oil, water, wood, diamonds, different kinds of minerals, uranium, cotton, rubber, and coffee beans. Farming in Ethiopia is different from these examples because these are not necessarily crops. They are natural resources. Certain crops in Ethiopia are the main point for farming. (To produce those certain crops)

    2. Arable land is land that is suitable for farmland and is ready to be cultivated.
    3. California and the Midwest.
    4. I think its both. This is because if other people are using the farmers land, the farmers will mosgt likely have no other job to turn to. It is good only if the farmers still get paid.
5.He means that the farmers are just trying to help their families get by and that there are so many that its like a colony.

  12. 1.) Ethiopia is a country located in middle east Africa surrounded by Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti, and Eritrea.
2.) “Arable” Means land used for or suitable for growing crops. Arable land must contain rich soil, plenty of sun, but some rain or just easy water access, and a flat surface.
3.) In the United States, the states with the most farmland are: California, Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Texas, Wyoming, and Montana.
4.) I think leasing Ethiopian land is a good idea, so the farmers will have money to grow crops, and the land would be used. However, the land should stop being leased at a certain point when the farmers have enough money to support themselves, so it doesn’t get out of hand.
5.) Merera Gudina means that Ethiopian’s work on large farms is a “colonial arrangement” because they are producing barely enough food for survival.
6.) Some African resources include oil, diamonds, gold, iron, copper, silver, woods, and tropical fruits. Some ethiopian resources are coffee and teff, a cereal used to make flour.

  13. 1. Ethiopia is in east-central Africa, bordered on the west by the Sudan, the east by Somalia and Djibouti, the south by Kenya, and the northeast by Eritrea.
    2. Arable land is land that can be used for growing crops and is suitable for agriculture. Good farmland must have smooth, fertile soil, a good source of light without any barriers, a close proximity to a water source and non-harmful neighboring lands.
    3. Plains in the midwest and the central U.S. usually have good farmland. The coasts usually don't have abundant farmland because they mainly consist of cities and larger populations.
    4. I think leasing the land is a bad idea. Yes, benefits such as infrastructure do occur, but the Ethiopians are doing all of the work and they don't even receive any crops. I believe they would be better off if they farmed the arable land alone along with one other reliable country by changing the lease terms and splitting the harvest evenly.
    5. Professor Gudina means that the residents of Ethiopia are working extremely hard every day to plant, grow and pick the crops and they do not receive any share. The more powerful countries in the lease are receiving the larger benefit whereas the poorer country is arranged to receive less.
    6. Along with the items listed above, Africa has cocoa, peanuts, gold, maize, bauxite, and coffee, originally in Ethiopia. Farming is similar to all three of these examples because the African citizens are doing all of the work, mining diamonds, drilling for oil, and growing grapes, and they hardly receive any share of the products/goods. Some may say that these are win-win leases, but I believe they are giving the more-benefited people more credit than deserved.

  14. 1. Where is Ethiopia? Ethiopia is located in east-central Africa.
    2. What is arable land? What qualities must good farmland have? Arable is land that can be farmed on. A good farm land must have good soil and especially needs to be semi-clean.
    3. What parts of our country are known for their abundant farmland? The parts of our country that is known for their abundant farmland is northern U.S. These states produce potatoes, tomatoes, and corn for the United States.
    4. Do you think leasing Ethiopian farmland to foreign investors is a good or bad idea? Why? I think it is a bad idea because in the future people will need the farm land to make food to survive. They will not be able to use the land because it would be leased by a foreign investor. This could cause a huge famine in Ethipoia.
    5. Merera Gudina, the political science professor in the video, likens the Ethiopians' work on large farms to a "colonial arrangement." What does he mean by this? I believe this means that Ethiopianfarm land is turn into small little colonial group. I think he means he wants the land split into a bunch of little lands and dividing each small piece of land to a Ethiopian farmer.
    6. What other resources does the African continent have? Take a look at diamonds in Botswana, oil in Nigeria, wine and agriculture in South Africa. How is farming in Ethiopia similar or different from those examples? Some other resources that the African continet has is green beans, artichokes, and radishes. Farming is differnt to those examples because food is a necessity. The examples up there are not necessitys because you do not need oil to survive.

#5. I THINK he's saying they should arrange the way they grow they're crops differently
#6. Africa has many mineral mines and oil mines. They have some farming too. The difference between agriculture and mineral mines, foresay, is that you have to mine the earth to try to find what your looking for, while agriculture, you grow what you want.

3 Parts of our country known for their abundant farmland is California for many different things, Idaho for their potatoes and may other places with specific items.
4 I think it is bad idea because that land could be leased to their own people who need the money and are willing to work.

  21. 1. Ethiopia is a country in eastern Africa with surprisingly many acres of rich and fertile farmland.

    2. Arable land is land that can be ploughed. Ploughing the land allows for oxygen to reach the growing plant which helps the plants grow and flourish. Good farmland must have moist soil with plentiful nutrients. These conditions will help the crops planted in this farming soil grow plentiful and strong.
    3. Florida is known for their abundant farming of citrus fruits and tomatoes! When the cold season hit Florida this winter I heard about how restaurants were not using tomatoes because the cold affected their growth which caused for a tomato shortage here. Florida is one of our main suppliers of tomatoes and I was amazed how one little cold front could affect so many restaurants and homes!
    4. I think sharing land with people from other countries is good because it allows them to grow crops for their area and also by creating farms in Ethiopia the foreign farmers are creating jobs for the people living in Ethiopia, but this can become a problem because the food being grown on these lands are going to supermarkets in other countries and there are not as many crops going to Ethiopia for all the waorkers in Eithopeia are working in farms for other countres. If a large portion of the land is leased and all of the crops are going to other countries, then there will not be as many crops growing an being sent to Ethiopia who needs food for those who are hungry.
    5. Merera Gudiba is saying that he likes how the local people of Ethiopia to work at farms that grow food for Ethiopia because he says when you work on a foreign leased farm you see the food, but are not eating the food in your country. Merera thinks the government doesn't give the people working on foreign farms in Ethiopia enough compensation for their work so he thinks they should stay with working on their local farms.
    6. Some other resources Africa has is gold, petroleum, groundnuts/peanuts, and Maize/corn just to name a few! Farming in Ethiopia is similar the resources in Africa because just as diamonds and oil help in the industries in Africa, he rich farmland in Ethiopia is used in agriculture and to feed an immense amount of people in the world.

    3. Idaho and Nebraska are know for having very fertile farmland for food products. This is just few of the very many.

    4. Bad idea, because people who make all their money off their farmland would have no food and no where to go. Their lives would be in ruins and so would Ethiopia's economy.

    5. He means that there could be a way where half the people would get the farm and the rich could get the other part of lands so there would be equal amounts of farming.

    6. Gold, copper, wheat, plastic, and oil. In Ethiopia they actually farm food and materials, instead of minerals and food.

3)Some parts of our country that are known for their abundant farmland are central california for most of our produce, midwest for corn, and other sunny states.

4)Yes, because they may have more expertise on how to raise the crops which will create more food in this time where food is so desperately needed. Also, they will give other Africans and Ethiopians jobs in farming the land, which will help provide food and money for these people.

    5) He means that it is like having a country/area working for another country/area, and it is beneficial for both areas.
